High School Mission Trip to Sunnybrook Children's Home
July 2014

Spring is here.  School is winding down and mission trip fever is on the rise!  We are very excited to tell you about our high school mission trip.  We will be returning to Sunnybrook Children's Home in Jackson, Mississippi.

Sunnybrook is a Children's Home that is dedicated to taking in students who need a place to live because their parents are unable to take care of them.  Reaching out to some of the youngest in our society, the staff at Sunnybrook shares God's love with children who may have never known His love before.

To help you know some of the details about the trip, we have created this webpage with lots of info about the trip.  You'll see a link at the bottom which will allow you to sign-up for the trip if you choose to go.  We invite all high schoolers to join us for this amazing trip of reaching out, sharing God's love, and serving Him.

Here are the details about the Sunnybrook Mission Trip:

-What are the dates?:
July 21-26, 2014

-Who can go?: Students who are currently in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade

- When is the sign-up deadline?: Wednesday, May 21.  If you want to sign-up before then, you can.  You don't have to wait til the last minute.  (But it's okay if you do.)

-What will we be doing?:  Lots of things.  Specifically, we will be spending time with the children at Sunnybrook, working on projects around the Sunnybrook campus, playing games with the children, teaching lessons to the children, and doing everything we can to shine God's light to the residents and staff of Sunnybrook.

-Where is Jackson, Mississippi?:  East of here.  If you need more specific info about this, use your computer to find a map.

-Isn't it a long way to walk?:  Yes, that's why we'll be taking the bus.

-How old are the children at Sunnybrook?:  All of the children are school age.  Some may be as young as Kindergarten and some may be in high school.

-Where will we sleep at night?: We will be staying in classrooms and in the gym at Sunnybrook.  You'll need a sleeping pad or an air mattress and a sleeping bag.

-Can we put duct tape on all of our mouths and not talk for the whole week?:  No.  Two reasons:  1) you need to brush your teeth.  2) you can't share awesome stuff about Jesus if you don't talk.  If you need more reasons to not duct tape your mouth, we can provide them.

-How can I learn more about Sunnybrook Children's Home?:
  Go to their website: www.sunnych.net

-What else do I need to know before I sign-up?:  This is a trip focused on serving others.  Before you sign-up for this trip, understand that you will need to have the heart of a servant for the entire trip.  If you are always thinking about yourself or if you get grumpy when you don't get your way, this is probably not the best trip for you.  However, if you are willing to make sacrifices in order to help others, then we think you will love this trip.  It will not be an easy trip.  We'll be working outside in the heat of July in Mississippi...we'll be spending long hours with the children at Sunnybrook...the food may not be that good...and we'll be getting up early/staying up late and doing everything we can to help the children and staff for the entire trip.  It's going to be amazing, but please know that you need to have a heart for serving others for this trip.

-What is the cost for this trip?:  $145.  This covers all of your food, transportation, activities, supplies needed for work projects, supplies needed for lessons/activities with children, etc.  You will also need money for 2-3 fast-food meals while traveling.  The deposit for this trip is $50.

-What if I want to go but can't afford the $145?:  We have full and partial scholarships available for this trip.  Do not miss this trip for financial reasons.

-Are there any requirements for this trip?:  Yes.  Because this is a service trip where we will be serving others for an entire week, there are some things we require of each student who will be going to on this mission trip:  Pray before you sign-up, service hours, scripture memorization, active church participation, and mission trip preparation meetings.

  • Pray before you sign-up:  Before you decide to sign-up, we ask each student to pray about this trip and pray about your involvement with it.  Ask God to help you have a desire to serve the children at Sunnybrook.

  • Service Hours: Every participant who goes on this mission trip will be asked to earn 15 service hours before we go.  These can be back-dated to February 1, and must be complete by July 20.

  • Scripture Memorization: Every participant who goes on this mission trip will need to memorize 5-6 scriptures about loving God and serving others.  We will give you the specific scriptures at our preparation meetings.
  • Active Church Participation:  This is a different kind of trip than our normal trips like Winterfest, Uplift or retreats...therefore, we ask you to be very involved in the life of our church family and in the life of this youth ministry.  If you have not been able to come to youth classes regularly in the past, then we ask you to make that a priority from now until the time we leave on July 21.  (And if you have a friend who does not go to this church who would like to come, talk to Monty.  We always welcome friends on our trips...but it would be good to talk about this just to make sure they understand the expectations of this trip.

  • Mission Trip Preparation Meetings: We plan to have 3-4 preparation meetings which all participants will be required to attend.  These meetings will start sometime around the beginning of summer and happen throughout June and early July.  We will work with everyone to try to find the best time for these meetings.  You will also have some preparation meetings with your teaching team.
